>>History
After releasing two release candidate versions, 1.0rc1 on July 25, 2005 and 1.0rc2 on October 25, 2005, instead of making a final release, the project developers started adding many new features, with the final release being repeatedly postponed. Instead, there were `F33f`_`[nightly builds`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Neutral_build]`_`f of the latest `F33f`_`[SVN`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Subversion_(software)]`_`f version made available on a daily basis.
The first stable release was on February 28, 2008, with the version number changed to 8.02. The versioning scheme was changed to that of `F33f`_`[Ubuntu`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Ubuntu_(operating_system)]`_`f, with the major and minor number representing the year and month of the release. Version 25.03 is the latest stable release; however for the most up-to-date version the user can download the relatively stable nightly build or download the source code from SVN.
`F33f`_`[Jennic Limited`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Jennic_Limited]`_`f prior to its closure distributed a version of Code::Blocks customized to work with its microcontrollers.`:cite-ref-6[`F5bf`_`[6`#cite-note-6]`_`f]
>>Features
Code::Blocks supports multiple compilers, including `F33f`_`[GCC`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=GNU_Compiler_Collection]`_`f, `F33f`_`[MinGW`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=MinGW]`_`f, `F33f`_`[Mingw-w64`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Mingw-w64]`_`f, `F33f`_`[Digital Mars`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Digital_Mars]`_`f, `F33f`_`[Microsoft Visual C++`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Visual_C++]`_`f, `F33f`_`[Borland C++`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Borland_C++]`_`f, `F33f`_`[LLVM Clang`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Clang]`_`f, `F33f`_`[Watcom`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Watcom_C_compiler]`_`f, and `F33f`_`[LCC`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=LCC_(compiler)]`_`f.
>>>Debugger
The Code::Blocks debugger has full breakpoint support. It also allows the user to debug their program by having access to the local function symbol and argument display, user-defined watches, call stack, `F33f`_`[disassembly`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Disassembly]`_`f, custom memory dump, thread switching, `F33f`_`[CPU`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=CPU]`_`f registers and `F33f`_`[GNU Debugger`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=GNU_Debugger]`_`f Interface.
>>>GUI designer
As of version 13.12 Code::Blocks comes with a `F33f`_`[GUI designer`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=GUI_designer]`_`f called wxSmith. It is a derivative port of wxWidgets version 2.9.4.`:cite-ref-7[`F5bf`_`[7`#cite-note-7]`_`f] To make a complete wxWidgets application, the appropriate wxWidgets SDK must be installed.
>>>User migration
Some of Code::Blocks features are targeted at users migrating from other IDE's - these include `F33f`_`[Dev-C++`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Dev-C++]`_`f, Microsoft Visual C++ project import (MSVC 7 & 10), and Dev-C++ Devpak support.
>>>Project files and build system
Code::Blocks uses a custom build system, which stores its information in XML-based project files. It can optionally use external makefiles, which simplifies interfacing with projects using the GNU or `F33f`_`[qmake`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Qmake]`_`f build systems.
